For Immediate Release: December 11, 2025
Iowa State Sen. Janet Petersen has released the following statement regarding the December release of the state’s Revenue Estimating Conference.
“No matter how Gov. Reynolds and Statehouse Republicans try to spin it, they’ve strapped Iowa with a historic, billion-dollar state budget deficit,” Sen. Janet Petersen (D-Des Moines) said. “Republican lawmakers have been in charge of the budget for almost a decade, overpromising economic growth and underdelivering for Iowans.”
“Statehouse Republicans continue to champion corporate tax giveaways and unlimited private school subsidies that prioritize the privilege of the few over the needs of the many. Most Iowans don’t feel better off. Monthly bills, food, childcare, and insurance costs are increasing faster than their paycheck,” Sen. Petersen said.
“The Legislature needs a hard reset on its priorities, and Iowa’s working families need a budget that works for them,” Sen. Petersen said.
Sen. Petersen is the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
