Senate Democrats Announce New Assistant Leaders

The Iowa Senate Democrats have released the following statement regarding recent leadership changes.

“I’m thrilled to announce that, following a recent caucus election, Senators Tom Townsend and Renee Hardman have been elected to serve our caucus as Assistant Leaders,” Senate Democratic Leader Janice Weiner (D-Iowa City) said. “Tom and Renee are outstanding public servants who are deeply committed to making Iowa a more affordable, welcoming, and prosperous home for all. I want to thank Senators Bill Dotzler and Izaah Knox for their service and invaluable wisdom and counsel.”

“I’ve been so proud to represent the people of Dubuque in my first two sessions in Des Moines, and I’m thankful to the rest of our caucus for their trust and support,” Sen. Townsend (D-Dubuque) said. “My goal has always been to give a voice to working Iowans from every walk of life, and I look forward to continuing the fight on their behalf from this new leadership position.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to embrace this new responsibility,” Sen. Renee Hardman (D-West Des Moines) said. “I’ve spent my career as an advocate for Iowans who are too often and too easily ignored in the corridors of power. As an Assistant Leader, I will continue to uplift the voices and the stories that make our state so special and ensure that every Iowan feels represented at the Capitol.”

Senators Hardman and Townsend join the Senate Democratic Leadership team, consisting of Leader Janice Weiner of Iowa City, Assistant Leader Matt Blake of Urbandale, Assistant Leader Molly Donahue of Marion, and Assistant Leader Cindy Winckler of Davenport. Senator Bill Dotzler of Waterloo and Senator Izaah Knox of Des Moines have stepped down from their Assistant Leader positions due to their retirement from the Iowa Senate.

Sen. Tom Townsend was elected to Senate District 36 in 2024, representing Dubuque. He is a veteran of the United States Navy, having deployed aboard the USS James Monroe and the USS Haddock. After his military service, Sen. Townsend became deeply involved in organized labor, including working as a journeyman wireman, the Business Manager for IBEW Local 704, and serving as the president of the Dubuque Area Labor Harvest. He was recently inducted into the Dubuque Area Labor Hall of Fame.

Sen. Renee Hardman was elected to Senate District 16 in a special election in December 2025, representing portions of Clive, West Des Moines, and Windsor Heights. She previously served on the West Des Moines City Council. Her career has been devoted to public service through various nonprofits and community relations roles.
