The Iowa Senate Democrats have released the following statement regarding a recent leadership election.
“I’m proud to announce that Sen. Matt Blake has been elected to serve as the Senate Democratic Whip,” Senate Democratic Leader Janice Weiner (D-Iowa City) said. “Matt has been a tremendous asset to our leadership team and I look forward to his continued partnership as we build for the future.”
“I’m thankful to my Democratic colleagues for entrusting me with this responsibility,” Sen. Matt Blake (D-Urbandale) said. “It is an honor to serve the people of Iowa, and in 2026 and beyond, Senate Democrats will work tirelessly to ensure every Iowan has a voice in state government.”
Sen. Matt Blake was elected to Senate District 22 in 2024, representing portions of Urbandale, Johnston, Des Moines, Saylor Township, and Crocker Township. He is a Major in the Iowa National Guard, serving as the Judge Advocate (JAG) for the 67th Troop Command out of Iowa City. He formerly served on the Urbandale City Council and is a practicing attorney in Des Moines. Sen. Blake lives in Urbandale with his wife, Alaina, and their two children.
