Today, the Iowa State Senate Democratic Caucus distributed a letter to the members of Iowa’s federal delegation warning about the dangers of food insecurity for Iowans. Senators Art Staed (D-Cedar Rapids) and Izaah Knox (D-Des Moines) have released the following statement regarding the letter.
“There are many polarizing issues on which our political parties disagree, but food insecurity should not be one of them,” Sen. Staed said. “Hundreds of thousands of Iowans rely on programs like SNAP and The Emergency Food Assistance Program every year, including thousands of children.”
“Our government should not be in the business of eliminating successful programs that create a positive impact on our communities,” Sen. Knox said. “The Local Food Purchasing Assistance and the Local Food for Schools and Child Care programs broaden access to high-quality, locally-sourced, nutritious food. I’ve seen the need for these programs in our communities up close. Eliminating them will contribute to rising hunger and food insecurity.”
The letter, addressed to Sens. Grassley and Ernst, and Reps. Feenstra, Nunn, Miller-Meeks, and Hinson, and signed by the entire Iowa State Senate Democratic Caucus, is attached to this release.
