Statement on October REC

Iowa State Sen. Janet Petersen has released the following statement regarding the October release of the state’s Revenue Estimating Conference.

“The majority party’s priorities are failing Iowans,” Sen. Janet Petersen (D-Des Moines) said. “Our state revenues are plummeting, cancer rates are up, and Iowa is trailing behind the rest of the country in economic growth.”

“Statehouse Republicans created a billion-dollar budget deficit with their corporate tax cuts and private school vouchers,” said Petersen. “This isn’t just a small dip in revenues, it’s a historic drop in revenue. The majority party’s plan is to bleed our reserves dry to pay for their giveaways.”

“The billion-dollar hole they created in the state budget is ongoing, but reserve funds won’t last forever,” said Petersen. “How long will taxpayers be asked to foot the bill for the majority party’s economic mismanagement?”

Sen. Petersen is the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
