Meet Whitney Mixdorf
Whitney Mixdorf is proud to be a lifelong North Iowan. Born and raised in Clear Lake, she is thrilled to be growing both her family and her small business in her beautiful hometown.
Whitney married her husband John Mixdorf in 2016. John is an amazing stepdad to Whitney’s 14-year-old daughter, Kinsey (Anderegg,) and together they share identical twin daughters, Caroline and Cora (6.) As a family, they enjoy traveling, golfing, and enjoying all of the fun adventures life in North Iowa has to offer.
Most of Whitney’s spare time is spent on her children- she can usually be found cheering on her oldest daughter in sports and 4-H, chasing after the twins, and leading their little Troop of Daisy Scouts. Her hobbies include reading, photography, gardening, and community advocacy.
Whitney graduated from Clear Lake High School in 2004 and studied at North Iowa Area Community College. She is currently enrolled at Waldorf University in Forest City, IA, and will soon graduate with a degree in Leadership Communication.
Her past work experience includes several years in the office of Burtness-Lundgren Plumbing & Heating, followed by ten years as a successful event designer. She was also a part-time employee of the Clear Lake VFW for over 13 years. An entrepreneur at heart, Whitney and John have owned and operated the award-winning South Shore Donut Company in Clear Lake since 2017. She is a Vice-Chair of the Cerro Gordo County Democrat Central Committee and is Co-Chair of the Communications Committee for the New Iowa Project. Whitney holds a seat on the Cerro Gordo County Compensation Board.
WHAT WHITNEY WILL DO FOR IOWA
Whitney’s strengths lie in problem-solving, advocating for others, and volunteering in her community. During the pandemic, she helped other local small-business owners find and apply for grants/funding opportunities and assisted several in updating and adapting their business models to survive the shutdowns. Whitney and John also started a “Blessing Box” program that helped provide many vulnerable Clear Lake residents with food and basic necessities during the lockdown. This past summer, she started the ”Donut Be A Litter Bug” at their business, where free donuts and coffee are given to customers willing to pick up a bucket of trash/litter.
Her love for public service was fueled by growing up watching her late grandpa, Bob Amosson, make his mark as a longtime County Supervisor for Cerro Gordo County. Their many talks about policy and current events left Whitney with a deep appreciation for bipartisanship, and a real understanding of the importance of working together for the public good. She plans to focus on advocating for Iowa’s small businesses, helping family farmers, defending the public education system and our teachers, and advocating for the needs of lower- and middle-class Iowans.
