2025 Legislative Clerk Program
A Senate Secretary works for a specific Senator and receives payment for 32 hours a week during the legislative session (Monday through Thursday). The 2025 session runs from January 13, 2025, through approximately May 2, 2025. Pay ranges from $14.63 to $16.83 and wage based on committee assignments of employing Senator. The Senator you work for determines daily duties and schedule. Training will be provided by the Secretary of the Senate’s office.
Example duties:
- Drafting and reviewing correspondence
- Scheduling of meetings
- Clerical and support assistance
- Tracking legislation
- Meeting with constituents and members of public
- Other work assigned by the Senator

2025 Legislative Session Internship Program
Interns work directly with Democratic senators and staff at the Iowa Capitol, assisting the communications team in shaping the message and sharing the story of the 2025 session. The internship program is open to college students, School to Work program participants, and others interested in learning the fundamentals of political communication.
Job Description
- Interns will assist with several critical communications responsibilities for the caucus, including:
- Photo, video, and graphic content creation
- Social media writing and production
- Website content production
- Newsletter production
- Press conferences and media relations
- Interns report to the Communications Director and Deputy Communications Director
- Working days and hours: Interns are typically scheduled between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with Friday morning scheduling available as well. The legislative session begins Jan. 13, 2025 and typically lasts about 20 weeks
- Minimum time requirement: Three to four hours per day and 12 hours per week
- Salary: Unpaid. Academic credit available
Required Skills
- Passion for government, politics, and making Iowa a better place to live
- Exceptional writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Effective organizational and time-management skills
- Commitment to showing up and doing the work
Preferred Experience
- Social media content creation, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube
- Multimedia production, including photo, video and graphic design
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Canva, WordPress
